A working power plant
Together with DONG Energy Topsoe Fuel Cell is demonstrating the SOFC technology in a working power plant. The SOFC unit generates 10 kW of power fuelled with natural gas.
The aim of this project is to:
- build a high-power SOFC stack-test unit
- establish it in a real life power plant
This will yield unique experiences that cannot be gained in a test facility or lab.
Topsoe Fuel Cell's contribution
Topsoe Fuel Cell has made the basic design for this test system and developed the operating strategies and procedures. Topsoe Fuel Cell uses this facility to test new stack concepts outside the lab.
This project also demonstrates the design concept of the hotbox. The stacks are mounted in a thermally insulated box - the Topsoe PowerCore™ - which is prepared in the Topsoe Fuel Cell production facilities.

New energy
The New Energy Plant situated in Finland is a showcase for a community-based on renewable energies only. One part of the entire energy system is the generation of electric power from landfill gas.
Topsoe Fuel Cell's contribution
Topsoe Fuel Cell has supplied 20 kW of stack power to its system integrator partner Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä has integrated the stacks into a CHP system. The demonstration started in September 2009.
Large SOFC
The objective of the Large SOFC project is to develop and demonstrate a high-power SOFC system.
Topsoe Fuel Cell's contribution
Topsoe Fuel Cell participates as a partner in the project. Based on a 3 kW stack design we have developed strategies to increase stack power. For the project demonstration, we have contributed 50 kW of SOFC stack power. These stacks will be integrated in a CHP system designed and built by Wärtsilä.
DEMO SOFC
The objective of the Demo SOFC project is to build and commission a production facility for SOFC cells and stacks. The products of the facility are demonstrated in a high-power SOFC system.
Topsoe Fuel Cell's contribution
During the course of the project, Topsoe Fuel Cell has engineered, built and commissioned its production facility for cells and stacks – supported by funding from the EU Life program. A batch of SOFC stacks made in the new facility will be demonstrated in a 50 kW CHP system designed and built by Wärtsilä.
