TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

Topsoe Fuel Cell’s SOFC technology is the result of more than 15 years of research and development. Today, the companyīs SOFC technology is leading with respect to such important characteristics as:
  • Power density
Power density exceeding 2 kWe/litre stack has been demonstrated.
  • Degradation rate
A 13,000 hour stack testing has shown that the degradation rate is significantly below 1% per 1000 hours. Through new solutions, the degradation has been reduced to <0.5% per 1000 hours.
  • Weight and material costs
The Topsoe Fuel Cell planar SOFC technology is employing thin anode supported SOFC cells and thin metallic interconnects in a fully sealed internally manifolded SOFC stack. The very thin cells yield a high degree of mechanical flexibility and low material consumption and cost. This also leads to the low weight of Topsoe Fuel Cellīs SOFC stacks.
  • Fuel utilisation
The Topsoe Fuel Cell stack design has a very high fuel utilisation, more than 90% has been demonstrated.
  • Mechanical quality
The Topsoe Fuel Cell has, by virtue of its unique composition, an outstanding mechanical strength and flexibility.
  • Operating temperature
The current operating temperature is 750–800°C, but development of a new generation of metal-supported cells will lower this temperature and further reduce material costs.

The Topsoe Fuel Cellīs technology is flexible and can be adapted to different form factors and product requirements. Thus, depending on the end application of the fuel cell system, Topsoe Fuel Cell develops cells of different sizes; for example smaller cells and stacks for micro CHP and APU and larger cells and stacks for larger distributed generation.
